What Led to Record Completion

How did the Kentucky Community and Technical College System award so many associate degrees in 2014–15, and can other colleges do the same thing?

During the 2013–14 academic year, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) awarded 9,580 associate degrees; in 2014–15, the college awarded 9,632. Since 2000, KCTCS has tripled the number of associate degrees it’s awarded.

KCTCS Chancellor Rhonda Tracy shares five specific reasons for the remarkable increases:

  1. The rise in online learning. “We’ve had a steady increase in online offerings, which allow degrees to be more accessible to all students,” says Tracy. KCTCS Online: Learn on Demand lets students earn degrees or certificates entirely online; Learn by Term lets students choose from more than 700 online courses, or 140 programs.
  1. More noncredit, customized workforce training. KCTCS allows students to convert noncredit training to credit-bearing courses, and with a steady increase in customized training, this conversion process is very helpful for students who want degrees.
  1. Dual-credit courses. Tracy says there’s been an increase in students taking dual-credit courses in high school, which helps with the attainment of an associate degree, because students can start college with credit hours. Some students earn KCTCS credentials upon high school graduation.
  1. Business and industry support. Through the Kentucky Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education, students can earn their degrees while working in the field. By allowing students to work and go to school at the same time, more students are able to complete their studies. Six of the KCTCS colleges offer this program in advanced manufacturing technology.
  1. Outreach to rural areas. “Historically, we’ve seen growth in the ‘Golden Triangle,’ the area outlined by Lexington, Louisville and northern Kentucky,” says Tracy. However, the most recent increases were in the western and eastern parts of the state. She attributes the increases to a renewed focus on those populations.

Although enrollment is down across KCTCS this year (as it is for most colleges), the college system will continue to focus on completion rates. All 16 colleges in the system are working on a strategic enrollment-management plan that is specific to each institution and will include benchmarks for recruiting, retention and completion. “We are expecting continued growth, but we know we have to work on it,” Tracy says.

Two Ways to Boost Completion Rates

There are two strategies that Tracy believes have best served KCTCS in increasing completion rates, and both of these efforts are easily replicable.

The first involves breaking down the degree into smaller steps. Many of KCTCS’s associate degrees are made up of modularized content, which ensures that students don’t get overwhelmed and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. “It’s a general success strategy — stackable, embedded credentials that lead to an associate degree.”

The second factor is a new method of teaching that the college adapted from Accelerating Opportunity Kentucky (AOKY), a program for students who have not completed their GEDs. In AOKY, the developmental coursework is embedded in the content coursework. This teaching approach mixes career training with support for math, writing and reading and gives students the skills they need to succeed in school and compete in the workforce. Students develop technical and foundational skills while working with a success coach and a career coach.

The program was so successful for the students without GEDs that KCTCS opened it up to students who have high school diplomas but are in developmental-education courses. “If we put the students who come in with the greatest need into this track, it reinforces confidence. We don’t want them to get mired in the muck of developmental education, so we have to continue to do a better job on the front end.”

Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute have collaborated over the past decade to develop studies that examine the public perception of manufacturing, skills gap in manufacturing and women in manufacturing. Building upon that research, Deloitte is now collaborating with the Manufacturing Day Producers to measure how Manufacturing Day is positively impacting the perception of the industry and its career options.

The 60 students selected to attend the 2015 Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Principal Investigators Conference reflect the diversity of community college populations, and their projects exemplify the variety of advanced technology educational opportunities the National Science Foundation (NSF) program supports.

Consider just three of the student exhibits that were featured during a showcase session last month during the three-day conference in Washington, D.C.

Austin HeavyRunner, a construction technology student whose backyard borders Glacier National Park, explained his work on a microhydroelectric generator. He and other students at Blackfeet Community College experimented with renewable energy equipment they created from repurposed materials. Their activities were part of the 2015 Summer Energy Technology Practicum that Missoula College-University of Montana offered at the tribal college in Browning, Mont.

Survey: Big benefits from ATE programs

Farther down the exhibit hall, Selena Flores of St. Philip’s College (Texas) described the manufacturing courses she started taking as a high school student using curriculum developed by the Automotive Manufacturing Technical Education Collaborative. Now in the fourth semester of a five-semester advanced manufacturing program, Flores attends classes full time and has a paid internship with Toyota.

“I feel so empowered,” she said of her experience learning to read blueprints and operate a wide variety of equipment.

New experiences

Three rows over Joshua Kimmel explained his suggestion for relocating the brake on a milling machine so it would be safer for him and other people in wheelchairs to operate. Kimmel earned a certificate through the Advancing Inclusive Manufacturing project, the ATE-supported initiative that prepares people with disabilities to begin manufacturing careers.

Kimmel said he liked learning the basics of machining while simultaneously informing researchers’ studies at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories, a multi-institution facility that develops products to assist people with mobility limitations. Completing the 12-week program encouraged Kimmel to enroll at the Community College of Alleghany County; he has also been hired as a technician at the lab in Pittsburgh.

Kenneth A. Walz, a long-time ATE principal investigator, says students’ participation in the ATE Principal Investigators Conference opens their eyes to other STEM fields and disciplines.

Walz, a chemistry and engineering instructor at Madison Area Technical College (MATC) who has been involved in four large ATE project grants at the Wisconsin college, has brought 16 MATC students to the conference during the past decade. Almost all were first-generation college students who had not previously visited Washington, D.C. Several had not even flown before.

Among peers and professionals

Presenting their work to multiple STEM professionals was also a new experience. During a typical 90-minute showcase, each student had one-on-one conversations with a couple dozen STEM professionals.

“The experience of compiling their data, creating a poster and then presenting it at the showcase session places students in the role of an expert. This is not something easily accomplished in a traditional education setting,” he wrote in an email.

Cultivating problem solvers

Walz noted that for several of the students the experience was “an important milestone” in their academic careers. “Participation in the PI conference encourages community college students to pursue higher academic and career goals, and to push themselves further than they would have previously aspired,” he said.

Most of the MATC students who have attended the conference were in degree transfer programs and have pursued bachelor’s degrees in STEM fields. One alumnus completed a summer internship at Ames National Laboratory. Two former student attendees have earned doctorates and a third is currently in graduate school. Others have talked to Walz about going to graduate school. (See story about a Ph.D. engineer who attended an ATE Principal Investigators Conference and now teaches at MATC.)

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) provides scholarships to students nominated by the principal investigators of ATE projects. The scholarships, funded with NSF-ATE support, cover conference registration and two nights in a hotel. The students’ colleges cover their travel costs.

Ready for the real world

Each year, NSF-ATE program officers meet the students individually at a breakfast where they award the students certificates. This year, AACC arranged for the students to learn about global career readiness from Donald McCoy, an IBM engineer and manager for 30 years before retiring and becoming a K-to-College STEM education consultant.

McCoy tailored his presentation to the students’ interests and offered advice on balancing parenting responsibilities with career plans, leveraging military experiences and obtaining internships.

He shared his personal experiences of working on global teams and offered practical advice on everything from preparing for job interviews to dealing with cultural differences. McCoy emphasized that employers want to hire people who work effectively on teams, make decisions and solve problems.

Facing workforce change: Do recruitment, retention, engagement better

Manufacturing labor gaps and changing demographics demand new approaches to (and attitudes about) workforce management.

For Amanda Saam, the path to greater financial security and better career prospects ran through Somerset (KY) Community College’s Industrial Maintenance Technology program. Saam, 36, graduated from the program in May, and after a summer busy with both job-hunting and spending time with her 13-year-old daughter, she started a job as a maintenance technician at Hitachi in August.

“I love my job,” Saam says. “Where I’m working, it’s a pretty much clean environment, and they have excellent benefits.” Plus, she says, “They really encourage growth within the company, and everyone’s really eager to help me learn what’s going on.”

It’s not a stretch to say that Saam reflects, in a few respects, the new manufacturing workforce. For all of the talk (and hand-wringing) about shifting age demographics in manufacturing workplaces, the full picture of the evolving industrial production labor force has to do with so much more than age.

It’s about women and members of immigrant communities pursuing shop-floor jobs that offer wages that can support a family plus the promise of a variety of advancement opportunities. It’s about midcareer maintenance employees finding themselves rebranded as reliability experts and recruited to join cross-functional collaboration teams charged with ensuring the seamless implementation of new corporate initiatives. It’s about plant owners and managers having to rethink how and when they schedule shift work because prospective employees are seeking opportunities that offer greater work-life balance.

Across plants—across job functions and responsibility levels—the labor landscape seems to be shifting underfoot. And these shifts demand new perspectives on recruiting and retaining talent, because manufacturers need high-functioning, agile, collaborative teams in place to be able to better compete in today’s fast-moving industrial marketplace. How to build and develop these teams? The process starts with a better understanding of the workforce dynamics at play and a multifaceted approach to recruitment and retention.

Now hiring

Early results from Plant Services’ new workforce survey (full results will be featured in our December issue) show just how significant of a challenge recruitment is viewed as by those working in industrial production. More than seven in 10 respondents to Plant Services’ online survey said recruiting talent is a major challenge in bringing about successful workforce change. Moreover, 60% of respondents rated attracting young people to the manufacturing field as a high or very high challenge for their specific facility.

The storyline is familiar: Baby boomer retirements and ambivalence among many young people about manufacturing jobs are producing a skilled-worker shortage. But the fact that the problem is widely recognized doesn’t make it any less acute. Research and consulting firm Deloitte estimated in February that the number of U.S. manufacturing positions that will go unfilled because of a lack of skilled labor will grow to 2 million by 2025.

“With the turnover that is coming up, the plethora of opportunities is sitting there,” says Craig Hopkins, project manager at the Versailles, KY-based Automotive Manufacturing Technical Education Collaborative (AMTEC), a partnership between (mostly Midwestern) community colleges and automotive suppliers and original equipment manufacturers. Even today, “We’ve got automotive companies and aerospace companies that are dying for people,” he says. Looking just at skilled maintenance labor needs, Hopkins adds, “If every community college was to produce 20 graduates right now, it would still take us three years just to backfill the current vacancies, and that’s a lot.”

Recruitment: new tools and priorities

So what can be done? Manufacturers aiming to fill their labor gaps must find ways to bust misperceptions about manufacturing jobs to get new workers through the front door, industry advocates say. And that demands proactive outreach to students, their parents, educators, and young people already in the workforce, they contend.

“Employers need to get out to the high schools, the middle schools, and open up their facilities for field trips,” Hopkins offers. “They need to be able to show what type of work is going to be done.”

“One thing we need to keep doing is to try to bring a little glamour to the industry,” suggests Kevin Curry, interim director of professional programs within the University of Kansas’ continuing education program. Manufacturers must focus on selling not only their products but also the value and appeal of what they do on a day-to-day basis, he says.

“I think a lot of people still have the misconception that factories are dirty, unsafe places,” he continues. And indeed, Deloitte’s survey found that while nine in 10 Americans believe manufacturing is essential to the U.S. economy, only a third of parents would encourage their child to pursue a manufacturing career.

Introducing young people to the reality of today’s factories—“almost spotless” facilities employing cutting-edge technologies and operating more efficiently and safely than ever, Curry says—via plant tours, sponsorship of school robotics clubs, and more can be a powerful part of manufacturers’ recruiting efforts. So can participation in high school and college career fairs and professional job expos/networking events, including those focused on women, cultural minorities or military members and veterans. All of these represent opportunities to give an industrial organization broader exposure and let employee representatives tell the company’s story to prospective applicants in a more-personal way.

Of course, compensation is one of the most compelling talking points manufacturers can present. “Talk about the financials that the people are really going to get,” Hopkins says. “Kids want money.”

So do career-changers—another vital labor pool for manufacturers. The promise of earning family-supporting wages in the application of in-demand skills was what drew Saam, a single parent, to Somerset’s maintenance tech program (which was developed through AMTEC).
“I found myself needing a better job to take care of my kiddo and myself,” Saam said after graduating in May. “I had so many people that I knew that had graduated from different programs who just couldn’t find work in their field, so I did some research to see what exactly people were looking for. Come to find out, not only are there not enough women in this field, but there really aren’t enough men, either.”

Both job security and the marketability of the skills and experience they’ll gain on the job are high on prospective applicants’ radar. “The fact that we still have a pension plan in addition to our 401(k) plan, that resonates really well,” says Gina Max, senior director of talent management and diversity at building materials and technologies specialist USG Corp. And on the flip side, she says, USG has also especially promoted its entry-level positions as “tour of duty” opportunities.

“We’ve started to talk more about the fact that you can work for us for a period of time, and we hope that will be for your career; however, that’s not the right choice for everyone,” Max says. “Some candidates will join our team and contribute really well, then make a career move within the company or possibly outside.” A recent company analysis found that about 12% of USG’s employees are in different functional areas than they were in 2010, Max notes. So, recognizing that new hires likely won’t stay in the same role for 10 years as many older workers did, USG touts the that it equips employees with transferable skills.

USG also has seen recruiting success in the past year via one crucial move: creating a mobile-friendly job application. Now, Max says, 20% of job applications are submitted by mobile device.

Today’s recruiting demands add up to a tall order for manufacturers. But Tony Espinosa, vice president of human resources and administration at Des-Case Corp., says a smarter, more-focused hiring approach is an imperative for businesses looking to remain competitive. “Any business’s talent acquisition must include an inclusive strategy to both find and hire great employees,” he says. “This requires a deliberate approach with hiring efforts. What hiring job boards are we using? What industry organizations should we be engaged in that help us connect with different groups? What universities or vocational schools should we be partnering with? Ultimately, how can we build a bridge to the talent that will make the organization great?”

Retention: give ’em what they want

The other vital part of the labor puzzle for manufacturers is figuring out the most effective ways to keep their current workforce engaged. Nearly four in five respondents to Plant Services’ workforce survey (79%) identified retaining talent as a major challenge.

What do today’s industrial production workers want? Good pay, yes: Survey respondents identified it as the top factor that would affect their stay-or-go decisions. But the importance of two other factors in particular—ample career development opportunities and work-life balance—can’t be overstated.

With respect to the first: “A lot of the retaining piece is, once someone comes in, not to say, ‘Oh, they’re really good; I don’t have to do anything now,’ ” says Elizabeth Williams Taylor, a supply chain black belt at DuPont and a region governor for the Society of Women Engineers. “It’s taking the time to understand, regardless of what you hired them in for…what their goals are.”

“Everyone wants to make a difference,” notes Des-Case’s Espinosa. Helping employees—Millennials in particular—see how and why their work matters and how their contribution can continue to evolve can encourage them to stay. That has major cost-savings implications for employers, who are eager to ensure that their training investments don’t walk out the door after a few months. “I don’t think people realize how important work is to people when it comes to morale, general happiness,” Espinosa says.

And yes, says Williams Taylor, some employees will want to spend their entire career as a mechanic. “But that’s not everyone,” she notes. “And if you make that assumption, if you have someone that’s really talented and you just leave them on the side and say, ‘Well they’re really good and they know what to do; give them lots of autonomy,’ but you spend no time finding out what they’re really interested in, chances are they’re not going to stick around.”

Career development for employees doesn’t always have to mean sending them for paid training, Williams Taylor points out. “There are a lot of things you can do that don’t necessarily require money,” she says. For example, one-on-one conversations with a manager are vital to gauge an employee’s interests and to figure out with whom the manager can connect the employee  in order to help forge a path toward meeting employee goals.

Adds Des-Case’s Espinosa: “Your people need to grow, and when management is cognizant of that and they have a plan for their employees, what ends up happening is growth and tenure, and then at the two-year point, when they’re finally trained to where they need to be, instead of leaving, they stay, and they start to add significant value to the business.”

Espinosa notes that a lack of development opportunities is one of the top reasons job applicants he’s interviewing cite for leaving their current employer. “When management stops having a plan for their people, people look for someone who has a plan for them,” he says.

Respecting employees’ interests means acknowledging and embracing their outside-of-work priorities, too, and doing more than paying lip service to work-life balance. Plant Services survey respondents rated work-life balance as their second-most-important factor when deciding whether to stay with a company, and more than 80% said it’s a major factor for them in deciding where to work in the first place—and that’s from a respondent base dominated by baby boomers (ages 51 to 70) and Gen Xers (ages 35 to 50).

Sure, most industrial production jobs don’t allow for flex time or work-from-home opportunities. That doesn’t mean, however, that manufacturers can’t do more to meet employees halfway when it comes to balancing work and home priorities.

“If I’m an operator, I can’t work from home; that’s granted,” Williams Taylor says. “But maybe looking at your shift schedules—are your shift schedules maximizing the time your employees can be home with their families? Do you even have to run shifts at all?”

Base vacation time and paid leave matter, too. Giving employees the chance to pursue their non-work priorities and off-the-job passions can go a long way in keeping them around. Williams Taylor points to companies that offer employees a six-week, use-it-or-lose-it vacation block every three to five years—“which is fantastic, because you never know what your employees like to do on the side,” she says. “I worked with a lot of hunters (in a previous plant role), and I think some of them would have gone nuts if every three to five years they could have had a six-week hunting season.”

Everybody in

GE’s recent “What’s the matter with Owen?” series of recruiting commercials smartly captures the evolution of what it means to work for an industrial production company. In one spot, titled “The Hammer,” new, young GE hire Owen receives from his proud dad a sledgehammer that Owen’s grandfather had used on the job. Owen clarifies that while GE does make powerful machines, in his role, he’ll be writing the code that allows machines to talk to each other. His father then mocks him, suggesting that Owen can’t lift the hammer, while Owen’s mother offers assurances that even though their son won’t be physically building anything, he’ll still “change the world.” GE’s tagline at the end of the spot: “Get yourself a world-changing job.”

The slyly subversive ad hits on the head the fact that a huge breadth of talent is needed within modern industrial companies. For employers, it’s no small challenge to create a cooperative rather than antagonistic work environment—to foster respect between different functional teams and among workers with widely varying backgrounds.

The challenge demands a long-term commitment to cross-functional collaboration, Espinosa says. “Collaborative culture is the crux of a great team today,” he asserts. Espinosa adds: “The future will continue to be more and more about team members effectively working together and leveraging their talents. If management misses this, the company will not only lose talent, it will begin to fall short in the areas of ideas, innovation, and ultimately strategy execution, all of which seem to flow more freely in collaborative teams.”

At Des-Case, each year a strategy team identifies strategic planning objectives for the coming year and then creates inter-departmental project teams of five to seven employees each to work on these. An executive leader of each team serves as the team’s sponsor and guide; the rest of the team consists of stakeholders in the project—those whose departments will be affected by the team’s work.

How else can plants create a more “everybody in” environment? Company-sponsored volunteer opportunities throughout the year can give employees from different teams the chance to interact and rally around a specific cause or effort. (Seventy-two percent of Plant Services survey respondents said their company offers opportunities to volunteer for charitable causes or events; 60% of those whose employers offer these said they have taken advantage of the chance to volunteer.) Within the facility, even changes as minor as tweaking the cafeteria menu to offer more vegetarian and globally influenced choices can signal to employees that their values and preferences are respected.

“There needs to be a stress that is coming from the leaders and senior management that the collective intellect is how we’re going to be competitive,” says Espinosa. “It’s not just one person’s ideas; it’s a team’s ideas—that is going to make us more competitive and create points of differentiation that are going to help us in the market.”

Alamo Colleges To Share in $15 Million Grant To Fund Training of High Tech Manufacturing Workers

As part of a multi-state consortium, the Alamo Colleges will receive $1.15 million to train workers for high tech manufacturing jobs. The Alamo Colleges has been selected a leader college and will be one of 13 community colleges in the U.S. awarded funds through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training (TAACCCT) initiative. The funds will be used to implement curricula and purchase training equipment that meets the Automotive Manufacturing Technical Education Collaborative (AMTEC) manufacturing curriculum. AMTEC developed a mechatronics curriculum for the U.S . auto industry that has been endorsed by Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field of engineering that combines mechanical, electronic, computer, software, control and systems design engineering in order to design and manufacture useful products. An industrial robot is a prime example of a mechatronics system.

The AMTEC partners work with the automotive industry to develop effective training programs that can be used across manufacturing in industrial maintenance applications. Henry Ford Community College is the lead institution for the consortium, which also includes eleven other community colleges in addition to Alamo Colleges. They are: Bluegrass Community and Technical College and Jefferson Community and Technical College in Kentucky; Bridgemont Community College in West Virginia; Danville Community College in Virginia; CARCAM/Gadsden State Community College in Alabama; Oakland Community College in Michigan; Pellissippi State Community College and Tennessee Technology Center at Murfreesboro in Tennessee; Rhodes State College in Ohio; and Rock Valley Community College in Illinois.

The Henry Ford/U.S. Department of Labor grant will provide funds to Alamo Colleges to implement the competency-based, industry-driven manufacturing curricula already developed through a National Science Foundation grant. The AMTEC curricula is designed to accelerate and contextualize learning for multi-skilled mechatronics technicians and maintenance workers in order to increase the number of students who earn college certifications. The curricula is largely based on modularized competency blocks that can be utilized as online, blended, or stand-alone modules.

“This grant responds directly to the requests for a ‘high level’ technician that the auto industry has been requesting,” said Alamo Colleges’ Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie. “The AMTEC curricula will be at the Advanced Certificate Level and Alamo Colleges will receive the curricula, lab equipment, faculty training and certification and technical support at no cost.”

Community Commitment: Toyota Hires Local Grads from Advanced Manufacturing Technician Program

SAN ANTONIO (May 19, 2015) – Two years ago Toyota Texas and Alamo Colleges invested in Bexar County’s future workforce. Today that collaboration started to pay big dividends.

Nine recent graduates of the first Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) program are becoming full-time Toyota Texas team members.

“The graduates’ incredible efforts, excellent teamwork and dedication to continuous improvement impressed everyone at Toyota, so we extended full-time job offers to all nine graduates who applied,” said Joe DaRosa, president of Toyota Texas. “Our partnership with Alamo Colleges demonstrates that when good ideas are shared, great things can happen, and we’re thrilled that these fine young graduates will join our team.”

Designed and implemented by Toyota and Alamo Colleges in 2013, the AMT program is an innovative manufacturing degree that combines classroom instruction and paid, hands-on experience at world-class manufacturing facilities. Toyota has partnered with local community colleges and area manufacturers to establish AMT programs in eight states. More
than 100 students currently participate.

“Our congratulations to these graduates and their families on reaching this milestone on the way to a bright future,” said Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie. “It is always so rewarding for us to see the culmination of partnerships such as the this one, and we are deeply grateful to Toyota Texas for helping us to create such an outstanding opportunity for these students and many more to come,” he added.

With successful completion of AMT program, these new hires have the potential to earn as much as $50,000 annually, plus benefits.

Toyota Texas employs 2,900 team members and assembles the Tundra and Tacoma for North America. Cumulative investment at the plant is $2.3 billion and produces more than 200,000 trucks annually.

Advance Manufacturing Center

Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) has partnered with Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) since 1987. The partnership has been a key driver of education and skills training, helping to elevate this plant to be one of the best in the world.

In 2006, Toyota identified a need to increase its pipeline of skilled workers and worked with BCTC to create the Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) program — a unique “work and learn” model that balances workforce needs with student learning. Now, 17 companies have joined the Bluegrass Chapter of the Kentucky Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (KYFAME) to create a structure that allows companies to innovate, adopt new technologies, and create talent. Toyota has provided space, staff, and more than $1.6 million in equipment and support for the program, enabling it to grow and succeed.

Funding for planning a new BCTC campus in Georgetown was allocated by the Kentucky General Assembly, and by 2008, the design was completed. An approximately 20-acre site was secured in Lanes Run Business Park, with the financial investment of $375,000 by the Scott County Fiscal Court. The city of Georgetown assisted in securing state funds to construct infrastructure. In 2014, the Governor and Legislature supported funding of a project to expand production at TMMK, and the training component included the campus for BCTC.

The Advanced Manufacturing Center will house the AMT program with high skills training to support the Bluegrass Economic Advancement Movement (BEAM) goal of making Central Kentucky a premier advanced-manufacturing area. In addition, BCTC will offer traditional academic courses for Georgetown-Scott County and surrounding communities.

The 78,000 square-foot center is expected to serve 1,200 students, with 12 full-time and 20 part-time faculty. Programming will include industrial maintenance, electronics, PLCs, industrial electricity, robotics, mechanical drives, fluid power, machining, and welding. Customized workforce training for business development will also be offered.

AMTEC, an NSF-ATE Center of Excellence in Advanced Automotive Manufacturing and the KCTCS-Office for Professional Development and Innovation welcomed college participants from Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Georgetown, Kentucky to their first workshop led by the National Institute for Women, in Trades, Technology and Science in learning to attract and retain more women in STEM Careers. The 2 day event, held at the KCTCS Systems Office in Versailles, KY was titled “Learn How to Get More Women in the Picture”. AMTEC Executive Director, Danine Alderete-Tomlin opened the workshop by focusing on students and introduced two successful Somerset Community and Technical College students, Amy Caudill-graduate 2011 and Amanda Saam-pending 2015 graduate from the AAS-Industrial Maintenance Technology Degree Program. Amy, 23, described her journey from high school through Somerset CTC into her career at Toyota Motor Manufacturing where she is now a newly promoted Maintenance Team Lead in Body Weld. Amanda, described her journey as a full time student and single mother to forging a new future for herself and her teenage daughter. It was apparent, that both ladies were highly appreciative of their college experience and would not be where they are without the assistance of everyone at Somerset Community and Technical College.

Ms. Ede Slovin, IWITTS National Speaker, shared her center’s research and personal experience on effective recruitment and retention from proven practices throughout the United States. Workshop participants all received a binder of presentation materials and worked in teams to develop strategies for their own college sites. An added benefit to this workshop was having Toyota Motor Manufacturing leadership and AMTEC Strategy Board Member, Keith Davis, TEMA TPC Manager of Team Member Development and Jack Lewis, Toyota AMT, share their current experiences in recruiting talent and encouraging students in STEM for all age groups.
